HELP! Baby Acne...Going dairy free?
So my poor little baby currently resembles a spotty teenager. He has baby acne, possibly caused by exposure to certain hormones while in the uterus. It started off when he was around 2 weeks old, just on his cheeks and forehead. It has since gone from his forhead but spread to his ears, his chest and the back of his shoulders. It doesn't seem to cause him any discomfort and he doesn't seem bothered about it but it looks very unsightly.
I have tried a couple of remedies to try and cure it. I wash the areas with warm water in the morning and he is bathed every night and for a while I was applying 100% pure coconut oil to the areas. This seemed to be starting to help after a few days of application, but then it seemed to worsen again. I then purchased Weleda Calendula cream and again applied that every morning and evening in place of the coconut oil. This hasn't seemed to improve matters either, the acne seems to have dried up slightly and is now rough to the touch but is still very much present and getting worse on his chest and shoulders.
After trauling the internet for some magic cure, I found a couple of sites that state that if a breastfed baby has an intolerance to dairy products in their mothers diet then that can cause the baby acne. So I am now going to try and go dairy free in my diet to try and see if this helps. I have my six week check up at the doctors with Rafe tomorrow so I will ask about it then aswell. To be honest it would probably do me the world of good to give up dairy for a bit, no more butter, ice cream and cheese will probably help with the post partum shape up process!
If anyone has any experience with baby acne and how to cure it then please let me know. It was recommended on some internet sites to use a weak strength hydrocortisone cream, but the idea of using a steroid on Rafe's skin worries me a bit and I like to keep remedies as natural as possible. Apparently it should eventually go away of it's own accord but if I can do anything to make it better quicker I would like to give it a try.
Here's a picture of my spotty little baby, as you can see it is pretty bad;
I will let you know what the doctor recommends and hopefully there will be some improvement soon.
