Mine and Rafe's six week checkup.

Went for our six week checkup at the doctors on Tuesday. I was quite anxious because my appointment was with a male doctor (as disorganised as I am I failed to ask for a female and just assumed that is who I would be booked in with...never assume). Also I had taking Rafe anywhere where there are likely to be an abundance of germs! Yes I know thats ridiculous and germs are everywhere but I'm just pretty paranoid of him getting ill especially when he has not yet had any immunisations.

Rafe has just started to fit into his up to 3 month clothes, which is a lot more fun as previously he has just been wearing sleepsuits everyday as they are easier. Now I can dress him up a bit more, predominantly in dungarees! He was sporting a rather fetching grey set on Tuesday, until a poop explosion right before we were due to leave put him back into a trusted sleepsuit!
But I went armed with anti-bacterial hand gel, we walked there as it's only 20 minutes from home (and I thought it would help with the mummy tummy situation) and were early, which was shocking after the earlier poop situation. We did wait outside until about 2 minutes before our appointment time, again to minimise exposure to germs in the boiling hot waiting room.

The doctor checked Rafe first. I can't remember everything that he looked at but he definitely checked his eyes, the fontanelles, his hips, spine and scrotum (poor Rafe) and they also weighed him. He is now 10lb 7 so another five ounces since the health visitor's appointment. The circumference of his head was measured and apparently he is developing normally in the 50th centile. I'm not going to lie, I am not entirely sure what that meant but aslong as everything is normal I am a happy mummy.

I did question him about Rafe's baby acne (which is now very red and rough and resembles the plague on his poor face) and was told that it was likely a combination of acne and dermatitis or eczema and that it was very common and likely to go away on it's own by the time he's six months old! Which does not cut it for me, six months is a long way away to be covered in spots so I've now purchased some baby Aveeno lotion to see if that helps. Also my dairy free and healthy living went a little wrong Tuesday evening...basically I ate a pizza...and then a whole box of Baklava BUT I am back on the dairy free and healthy eating wagon and yesterday was a good day. I think it's far too early to notice any improvement in Rafe's skin but I am going to perservere.

Then attention was turned to me. He asked questions about my stitches post epidural, he also offered to check anything if I was concerned (I wasn't). He asked about discharge, my mental health and how I felt I was coping emotionally and then broached the subject of contraception, for which there is no need...and probably won't be for quite sometime (terrified).
He obviously asked all the questions that he needed to and he was very polite and friendly. I haven't felt like I have had any problems in the way of post natal depression, however I do think that it would be very easy for somebody who was suffering to hide it, and maybe doctors should question a little more thoroughly.

For anyone about to book their six week checkup, I would recommend asking for a female doctor if you would feel more comfortable as they probably won't automatically assume you would want one. That's all for now as Rafe is now very much awake and requesting my immediate attention!
